Motion motors are used to drive various parts of the machine to achieve precise movement and positioning. These motion motors are used: X-Axis Motor: Controls the horizontal movement of the machine table or workpiece along the X-axis. It moves the table or the workpiece left and right. Y-Axis Motor: (2 Motors Required) Controls the movement along the Y-axis, typically perpendicular to the X-axis. It moves the table or workpiece forward and backward. Helical Gear Rack and Pinion Transmission System

Maker Store’s helical rack and pinion system is an excellent choice for the X and Y axes in a plasma CNC because it provides both high speed and smooth, accurate motion, which is ideal for the large, rapid movements these axes often require. The ability of Helical racks to be butt joined together makes FORTIS extendable to any length. The angled teeth of a helical rack and pinion create more contact surface area compared to straight-cut gears, which helps distribute the load more evenly and reduces backlash for precise cutting.

Additionally, the helical design operates more quietly and with less vibration, leading to greater stability and reducing the wear on components. This setup is perfect for plasma CNCs that need consistent accuracy across wide cutting areas. When installing the Helical rack onto the Maker Store 40 Series extrusion, use the Maker Store Helical Rack installation tool and the Gear Rack Motor Mount Plate.

Ball Screw Transmission System for Z-Axis

Using a high-accuracy transmission system like a SFU1204 ball screw for Z-axis travel in a CNC, is crucial for achieving precise cuts and maintaining consistent quality. The Z-axis controls the height of the spindle, which directly affects cutting accuracy. Sturdy Machine Frame

The FORTIS Router CNC – 1000x1000mm – Complete Kit boasts a sturdy frame constructed from high-strength 40 Series T-slot Aluminum Extrusions, specifically using 40×40 and 40×80 profiles.

The T-slot construction allows for easy attachment of components and accessories, making modifications and customizations straightforward.

Rigid Gantry Plates allow two clearance configurations

The FORTIS Router CNC Machine features versatile Y-axis gantry plates that allow for two distinct clearance configurations to accommodate various cutting needs. Users can assemble the machine with either a 150mm clearance, ideal for handling thicker materials and providing ample space for complex cuts, or a 110mm clearance configuration, offering a more compact setup. This flexibility ensures that the FORTIS Router CNC can be tailored to different applications, enhancing its adaptability to a wide range of projects while maintaining precision and control.

Use of Robust 25×50 Cable Drag Chain

The FORTIS Router CNC features an effective cable management system using 25×50 drag chains to keep cables organized, protected, and free from obstruction during operation. The robust 25×50 drag chains are used on the X and Y axes, offering ample space for housing the machine’s cables and hoses, while ensuring smooth and reliable movement. These drag chains prevent cable tangling and wear, which is crucial for maintaining the machine’s performance and extending the lifespan of its electrical components.

Custom Ball Screw Brackets

The FORTIS Router CNC uses Custom ball screw brackets that replace the traditional Fixed and Floating Ball Screw supports making the whole assembly compact and lightweight.  These brackets are suitable for SFU1204 – 12mm Ball Screw and are made from Aluminum 6063-T5. The bracket at the threaded end of the ball screw uses 6800-2RS Bearing with a dynamic load rating of 1.38kN. The bracket at the non-threaded end uses a 688Z Bearing with a dynamic load rating of 590N.

Custom Foot Bracket

The FORTIS Router CNC is equipped with custom foot brackets that allow users to attach 40 Series extrusions to the machine base, creating a table.

These brackets are made from 2 mm-thick Mild Steel Sheet.

The brackets use M8 hardware that creates a sturdy connection.

Pinion Pivot Mechanism

With the addition of the FORTIS Router CNC, Maker Store developed a new pivot mechanism for the Helical Gear Rack and Pinion.

The result is more sturdy compared to the pivot mechanism used in machines like WorkBee and Ox-GEAR.

This new pivot mechanism maintains constant tension between the Helical Pinion mounted on the motor shaft and the Helical Rack using a custom Rod End that has a threaded hole.

By maintaining constant engagement between the pinion and rack, the system ensures accurate positioning and smooth motion, even at high speeds or under heavy loads. This improved tensioning system also reduces wear on the components, contributing to the machine’s overall longevity. For users, this means less maintenance and more reliable performance, making the Pinion Pivot Mechanism a valuable innovation for precision-driven tasks.

Controller 

FORTIS Router CNC – 1000x1000mm – Complete Kit comes with the E5X MCS Controller.

This controller is a powerful 32-bit CNC controller, running on grblHAL firmware, which is quickly becoming the firmware of choice for CNC control, due to increased functionality and added features, far superseding the current 8-bit CNC controllers running on the standard grbl or grbl ESP32.

Depending on the user’s requirements, E5X MCS can be connected via a USB or Ethernet interface.

The E5X MCS T4.1 uses the advanced grblHAL firmware because of the several benefits it offers. It is based on the Teensy 4.1 microcontroller, which is currently the most powerful microcontroller in its class.

XYZ Touch Probe

No more setting your workpiece height with a bit of paper or aluminium foil!

With its user-friendly design, the XYZ Touch Probe simplifies tool and workpiece setup.

By probing specific points or edges, the machine precisely determines the position of the tool and workpiece, which increases accuracy and provides consistent results.

This eliminates the need for manual measurements and ensures consistent setups across multiple machining operations. This saves valuable time and improves overall workflow efficiency and productivity.

 

Software for the FORTIS Router CNC – 1000x1000mm – Complete Kit

With CNC machines, you will require two pieces of software to create your projects. The first software (CAD/CAM) will be responsible for creating the cut files (gcode file), while the second software (gCode Sender) is responsible for reading the gcode files. Together, CAD/CAM software and G-code sender software provide a comprehensive workflow from design to production, ensuring that CNC machines operate efficiently and accurately.

 

CAD/CAM (First Software)

CAD/CAM Software:

    • Purpose: CAD (Computer-Aided Design) and CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) software are used for designing and preparing the machining instructions. CAD software is used to create detailed 2D or 3D models of the parts or components to be machined. CAM software then takes these designs and generates the toolpaths and machining strategies required to manufacture the parts.

g-Code Sender Software (Second Software)

G-code Sender Software:

    • Purpose: This software is responsible for communicating the generated G-code instructions from the CAM software to the CNC machine. G-code is the language used by CNC machines to perform specific operations, such as moving the tool, setting speeds, and controlling other aspects of the machining process.
    • Function: It transfers the G-code files to the CNC machine, ensuring that the machine performs the operations as planned. This software often includes features for real-time monitoring and controlling the CNC machine during the machining process.
  • ioSender (Recommended) – FREE

ioSender is a powerful gcode sender developed for grblHAL and used for CNC control. Its feature-rich and easy-to-use interface makes it an ideal CNC gcode sender. This software is recommended for use with E5X MCS to get the full functionality of the controller. Features include, but are not limited to:

  • Auto-levelling
  • Multiple probing techniques (edge finding, semi-automatic tool changes, circular probing)
  • Job framing
  • Ethernet Connectivity (supported controllers only)

Table

The Table for FORTIS CNC 1000x1000mm is constructed using durable 40 Series T-slot aluminum extrusion, providing a solid and stable foundation for the CNC machine. This robust frame is designed to support heavy-duty cutting tasks while minimizing vibrations, which helps to maintain precision and accuracy during operation. The legs of the table can be easily attached to the Custom Foot Brackets of the FORTIS using M8 hardware.

Router Add-Ons

Note: For a fully functional Router CNC Machine, you need the following:

  • Build your own Spoiler Board -Maker Store Spoiler Board for FORTIS CNC 1000x1000mm – Coming Soon!
  • Build your own Table Maker Store Table for FORTIS CNC 1000x1000mm – Coming Soon!
  • The recommended Spindle for this machine is a 1.5kW Air-cooled spindle Bundle.
  • Alternatively, a 2.2kW spindle and a water pump cooling system would work extremely well.
  • Collets, end mills, and bits are not pre-selected for this kit, which allows customers to choose the option best suited to their application.

All of the custom brackets and plates used in the FORTIS Router CNC machine have been tested using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). This advanced computational method played a crucial role in refining the machine’s design, allowing for virtual testing and optimization before physical prototyping. The physical prototyping further helped the Maker Store engineers to optimize the design for optimal performance.
