Smooth, Quiet, and Built to Last:
Introducing the Opposite Helical Tooth Gauge Tool
The Opposite Helical Tooth Gauge Tool is a specialized device designed for aligning two helical gear racks. Its primary purpose is to facilitate the precise alignment of these gear racks to ensure smooth operation and optimal performance.
This tool features left-oriented teeth that are opposite to the teeth of the helical gear racks. By placing the tool over the junction where the two racks meet, technicians can accurately align the racks with each other. The tool is then firmly attached to the racks using C-clamps, creating a secure connection that allows for fine adjustments in the distance between the teeth of the racks at the junction.
One of the key advantages of the Opposite Helical Tooth Gauge Tool is its ability to ensure proper alignment of the gear racks, which is essential for efficient transmission of motion and minimizing wear on the machinery. Additionally, the tool provides a reliable method for aligning the racks during installation and can be easily removed once the alignment process is complete.
Overall, the Opposite Helical Tooth Gauge Tool plays a critical role in the assembly and maintenance of machinery utilizing helical gear racks, contributing to smoother operation and prolonged equipment lifespan.
How to use the Opposite Helical Tooth Gauge Tool
- Clean the Helical Gear Racks and ensure the mounting surface is free of debris.
- Mount the two Helical Gear Racks onto the mounting surface placing them side by side. Make sure to keep the bolts loose.
- Align the first rack to the mounting surface and tighten the bolts.
- To butt join the racks, an opposite tooth gauge tool is used. This tool has Left Oriented Teeth (opposite to the rack). Place the tool over the junction of the racks. See the image below:
- Using 2x C-Clamps to firmly attach the tool and the racks as shown in the image below
- The distance between the teeth of the racks at the junction will adjust due to clamping, allowing for smooth movement of the pinion.
- Align the right rack onto the mounting surface and tighten the bolts.
- If the racks need to be removed or replaced in future, insert dowel pins in the far end holes, through the racks into the mounting surface or use the Maker Store Alignment tool to realign the racks.
- Remove the clamps and the opposite tooth gauge tool.

How to install and align the Helical Gear Rack
When installing the Helical rack onto the Maker Store 40 Series extrusion, use the Maker Store Helical Rack installation tool shown.
Additionally, you will need the following hardware:
Use the Alignment Tool to space the Gear Rack correctly from the top of the 40 Series Extrusion- 4080. Start at one end of the Y-Axis assembly, push the tool down onto the 40 Series Extrusion’s top, and tighten the hardware around the tool. Slide the tool slowly down the Gear Rack to the center, then the opposite end, tightening the bolts as you go. Once aligned tighten the remaining bolts. See the video below for reference.
The Helical rack comes with two pre-drilled holes of diameter 6mm for dowel pin/alignment pin installation, which is not included. If you want to remove and replace the rack without realignment, you can use these two holes to install dowel pins through the rack into the mounting structure. The main purpose of dowel pins is to maintain the alignment of the rack even when it’s removed from the surface.
Once you remove the rack for any purpose, the dowel pins will still be in place mounted on the surface. When you want to mount the rack back onto the surface, you can slide the rack through the dowel pins and mount it back without the need to use the alignment tool for alignment. However, if you have an alignment tool like the Maker Store Alignment tool, you don’t need to use the dowel pins.
